The purpose of National Honor Society (NHS) is to inspire students to uphold and maintain its four pillars - scholarship, service, leadership, and character - as a precedent for not only inducted members but also as a model for the entire student body. Prior to the district’s spring break, 27 students from the classes of 2023 and 2024 were inducted into Midview High School’s NHS chapter.
The requirements and membership protocol for National Honor Society rest solely on its four pillars. In order to be nominated for Midview’s National Honor Society, candidates must be enrolled as students at Midview High School before the third week of the current school year and be either a junior (spring eligibility only) or a senior (fall and spring eligibility). Applicants are notified of eligibility if they have maintained the scholarship baseline of at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
If invited to apply for membership, candidates must prove completion of eight service hours from the current academic year. In addition, applicants must request sponsorship from five different individuals who may attest to the student's participation in service and leadership activities outside of academics. Character, the fourth and arguably the most transparent of the pillars, is determined by ratings from the academic faculty at Midview High School. Character assessment includes but is not limited to behavior, timeliness, honesty, integrity, discipline, and flexibility both inside and outside the academic environment. The last step in the application process is performed anonymously by a council that assesses all applicants’ scores and documents to determine whether or not the student will be inducted.
“The ambition our students have to achieve their goals and overcome challenges is inspiring. So, when I prepare invitations for students to apply to NHS, I am always overjoyed by the number of students meeting the foundational requirement [a cumulative GPA of 3.5],” said Amy Guildoo, MHS National Honor Society adviser. “Those wishing to be inducted members of NHS typically demonstrate the enthusiasm and drive to meet the requirements and responsibilities of the organization. And, considering NHS is 90% student-driven with my role as merely the navigator of their endeavors, watching students grow into the leaders I know them to be is a gift. I am humbled by the outstanding leadership skills illustrated by the officers and members with regard to community connections and outreach programs in our area. Whether it be through holiday nursing home visits or guest reading roles in our elementary buildings, observing adolescents develop and refine their altruism is a phenomenal experience.”
