safety

Dear Midview Families,

I want to take a moment to share some information about an important safety training that will take place on Friday, March 21, 2025. While students will be off that day for scheduled professional development, our staff will participate in a district-wide safety drill in collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency personnel.

Given the significant number of first responders that will be on campus, I want to ensure that our school community is fully informed about what will take place.

Each year, school districts are required to conduct Emergency Management Tests of a certain magnitude. While we regularly conduct various safety drills with students throughout the school year, it has been over a decade since we last held a full-scale active shooter/intruder drill.

Since August, our administrative team has been working closely with local first responders to plan and coordinate the logistics for a drill of this nature, ensuring it is organized, effective, and valuable for everyone involved.

The drill will be led by the Grafton Police Department, Lorain County Sheriff’s Department, and Eaton Township Fire Department, along with additional support from neighboring agencies. The goal is to review and refine our internal safety protocols while allowing local emergency personnel to practice coordinated response efforts in a controlled environment.

During the drill, staff will practice lockdown procedures and emergency response protocols. The exercise will include simulated real-world conditions, including the firing of blank rounds to create a realistic training environment for emergency personnel. All campus entrances will be blocked off, and signage will indicate that a safety drill is in progress to minimize disruptions.

Again, this day is a previously scheduled professional development day, and no students will be present.

We recognize that safety drills of this nature can bring about a range of emotions. As a father of two school-aged children and a husband to an educator, I too share those feelings. However, regular training is essential to increase preparedness in the event of an emergency. By working together with our emergency responders, we can continue to strengthen our response strategies.

Our goal is always to create the safest possible learning environment for our students and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Dr. Frank Major, Superintendent
