PBIS

The Midview Local School District is proud to announce that Midview Middle School, Midview East Intermediate School, Midview West Elementary School, and Midview North Elementary School have all been recognized for their Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) programs. This marks the fifth consecutive year the schools have earned awards, with North Elementary, West Elementary, and the Middle School earning Silver distinction and East Intermediate receiving an impressive Gold distinction.

PBIS is a national effort that includes the development of school-wide behavior agreements and systems that teach, practice, and recognize positive behaviors across school settings while providing support and correction for problem behaviors. Midview Local Schools emphasizes three district-wide behavioral expectations: We Are Ready, We Are Responsible and We Are Respectful.

“Our staff’s dedication to implementing and strengthening our PBIS programming is commendable,” said Superintendent Dr. Frank Major. “Expectations are clearly communicated to our students, who are excited and motivated to make good choices. By operating in a proactive mindset – teaching and acknowledging what students are doing right instead of focusing on what they’re doing wrong – we can maintain a learning environment where students and staff feel appreciated, safe, and respected. Our continued commitment to PBIS supports our mission to provide a well-rounded education for all students.”

Midview utilizes KickBoard, a system that allows K-12 staff to track positive behaviors and award students Middie Bucks for exemplary conduct. Students can redeem their Middie Bucks for prizes —like fidgets and snacks—as well as experiences that vary by grade level, such as principal for a day, lunch with the principal, pajama day, bringing a stuffed animal to school, and extra recess.

Throughout the year, PBIS celebrations are organized, featuring fun activities, snacks, and surprises for students. Upcoming events include a glow-themed party at West, a visit from Basketball Jones at North, and a PBIS Assembly at Midview Middle School with exciting "Minute to Win It" games and challenges for both students and staff.

“Our PBIS programs have allowed us to prioritize both behavioral supports alongside educational needs. We’ve worked to create a fun environment where students take ownership of their progress, see the positive effects of their actions, and want to work toward goals/rewards that are meaningful to them,” said Allison Hohla, East Intermediate Principal. “Our East team has concentrated on personalizing our PBIS approach to better support our students. The effort they have invested in monthly meetings, implementing additional interventions, and tracking behavioral outcomes has been invaluable. Their dedication deserves recognition. It truly takes a team effort to make a difference.”

Ohio’s PBIS Recognition System, coordinated by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce in collaboration with the Ohio PBIS Network, celebrates schools and districts that demonstrate quality and fidelity in their PBIS programs. Awards are given at various levels—bronze, silver, gold, and district—based on the effectiveness of their implementations.

The PBIS framework requires continuous progress monitoring to ensure that interventions and systems are working to effectively meet outcomes. To qualify for recognition, schools must provide data related to behavior, attendance, staff PBIS meetings, and intervention samples for the previous year. Earning recognition signifies that schools are meeting their PBIS goals, and effectively supporting students with varying needs.
